Hertz Terms & Conditions - Summary of Key Points

Please note: for Hertz New Zealand's full terms and conditions, a link will be provided upon booking submission.

Below is a summary of the most important information. If you have further questions, please contact our customer care team.

Rental Vehicle Excess

The excess can range between NZD $4,200 and NZD $7,200 depending on the vehicle type, and will be specified in the Rental Agreement you accept upon pick up.

The excess is the most you’ll pay towards repairs for damages to the vehicle’s bodywork, where the repairs are covered by the rental provider’s basic insurance. The basic insurance often doesn’t cover damage to other parts of the vehicle (overhead, underbody, interior, windows, wheels) or other charges (misfuelling, loss of use, key loss, towing, roadside assistance, child seats, GPS devices, personal belongings); you may be charged full costs for repair or replacement expenses that are not covered by the basic insurance.

Protection options to reduce or reimburse the rental vehicle excess are available. These options include third-party Rental Vehicle Excess insurance, and excess reduction waivers sold by the rental provider at the rental counter.

Credit Card Surcharge

Up to 2.53% of the total transaction value will be charged to any card used for payment with Hertz New Zealand.

Security Deposit/Bond

Hertz will pre-authorise a security deposit of NZD $200 on the nominated card upon collection of the rental vehicle. A valid credit card in the renter's name is required for all bookings; the card must have available credit.

Accepted Cards

  • Mastercard
  • Visa
  • American Express

EFTPOS-only debit cards are not accepted. Cash cards are not accepted.
The cardholder must be present upon collection of the rental vehicle.

Driver and Licence Requirements

Upon commencement of the booking, renters are required to present a valid passport or national ID card, an unrestricted driver licence printed in English, and an accepted credit or debit card.

Drivers Licence & ID

Drivers must be of or over the age of 21 (unless approved in writing by Hertz) and must hold a current driver licence that:

  • is in English or, if not in English, is accompanied by a certified English translation;
  • allows operation of the selected vehicle;
  • is not a learner permit;
  • the driver has held for at least twelve consecutive months; and
  • satisfies any conditions outlined in the Rental Agreement or in any additional terms.

Renters From China

Renters from China can use a China Notarial Certificate (CNC) in place of an International Driving Permit, however the original Chinese licence MUST be presented alongside the CNC and satisfy any conditions outlined in the Rental Agreement or in any additional terms.

Age Restrictions

The renter must be at least 18 years old to rent a car with Hertz, and renters under the age of 25 will be subject to vehicle restrictions and the Young Driver surcharge.

Prestige/Adrenaline/Dream Collection

Renters must be of or over the age of 25 to drive any of Hertz’s Prestige, Adrenaline, or Dream vehicles.

Young Drivers

An age surcharge of NZD $20 per day will apply for young drivers, including additional authorised drivers on the Rental Agreement, aged between 18 and 20 years old.

Local fees and charges may be added to the total cost of the booking by Hertz upon collection of the rental vehicle.

Additional Drivers

Additional drivers can be added to the Rental Agreement upon collection of the rental vehicle.

The renter may authorise other persons to drive the vehicle if they meet the age and licence requirements specified in this section and are either:

  • a member of the renter’s immediate family who resides in the same household as the renter;
  • The renter’s employer, employee, colleague, or business partner and the vehicle is being rented for business purposes;
  • A person who is contracted to perform work for the renter, or an employee of a person or entity who is contracted to perform work for the renter, and the vehicle is being rented for the purpose of carrying out work;
  • A person who has been granted written approval by Hertz to drive the rental vehicle.

If a driver does not meet the above requirements, they must be added to the Rental Agreement as an additional driver and must present a valid driver licence upon collection of the rental vehicle. An additional driver fee is payable. All drivers must be of or over the age of 18 (unless granted written approval by Hertz).

Additional Driver Fee

A charge of NZD $5.50 (including GST) per additional driver per day applies to all additional drivers who do not qualify as immediate family or employment-related relationships as outlined above. The additional driver fee is capped at five days per 30-day period with a maximum charge of NZD $27.50 (including GST) per 30-day period. Hertz may add local fees and surcharges to this cost upon collection of the rental vehicle.

Additional drivers must be added to the Rental Agreement at the time of collecting the car and must meet the licence and age requirements outlined above.

Inter-Island Travel

Hertz vehicles cannot be taken between islands. Hertz has locations at the Interislander ferry terminals in both Wellington and Picton. For inter-island travellers, a multi-island rental arrangement can be made where a vehicle is booked on each island—subject to availability—provided the booking duration is a minimum of four days. A ferry terminal fee of NZD $46.00 (including GST) applies to rental bookings commencing from ferry locations.

Fuel Policy

Full to Full: The vehicle is supplied with a full tank of fuel; if the vehicle is not returned with a full tank of fuel, additional refuelling fees will apply.

Mileage

Unlimited kilometres are included for the duration of the booking unless otherwise specified when booking.
