Alamo car rental terms and conditions at a glance

Accepted forms of payment

Alamo accepts all major credit and debit cards, and cash, for payment, but only accepts credit cards — not debit cards or cash — for the deposit. Cards branded only with Union Pay are not accepted, but Mastercard and Visa cards with the Union Pay logo are accepted.

Additional fees

Alamo may levy an additional charge for any of the following (though not limited to) cases:

  • Additional drivers

  • Child seats

  • Additional roadside assistance coverage

Additional driver

Alamo allows additional drivers, for a $5.75 surcharge per driver per day to a maximum of five days, meaning the maximum charge for one additional driver is $28.75 regardless of the length of the rental. Note that any additional nominated driver, as with the primary driver, must have a full drivers licence and be present when the vehicle is collected at the beginning of the rental period.

Age restrictions

The minimum age for renting a hire car with Alamo is 21 years old and there is a Young Driver surcharge for drivers under the age of 25 of $14.95 per day. Drivers under the age of 25 can only reduce their damage liability to $340, and are restricted to compact, economy, intermediate and standard rental vehicle classes only. Probationary licences are accepted, but there is a surcharge of $23 per day.

Drivers must be at least 25 years of age to hire a Tesla electric vehicle.

Alamo does not impose a surcharge for senior drivers, nor does it have a maximum age limit.

All drivers, including young drivers, must have held their licence for at least one year.

Animals

Alamo allows the carriage of an accredited or trained disability assistance dog for customers. Any other pets or animals are not permitted in Alamo vehicles without written permission.

As with all rentals, additional cleaning fees and an administrative fee may be charged in the event the interior of the vehicle requires unusual or unexpected vacuuming, sanitation or shampooing.

Cancellations

If you cancel your Alamo booking through a no show, or even with prior notice, there may be a cancellation charge applied of 100% and 10% respectively. Cancellations are also subject to a processing fee of 10% of the refund due, or $20, whichever is higher.

Child seats and GPS

Alamo can provide child and toddler seats, baby seats, and booster seats. These all conform to government standards, and as supplies are limited, please order a child seat at the time of your reservation, stating the age of your child so the correct type of child seat can be booked.

Credit and debit card surcharges

Alamo applies a 2.5% surcharge to all credit card transactions, excluding the security bond.

Damage to/loss of rental vehicle
In the unfortunate event of an accident:
  • If there are injured people, contact emergency services first.

  • Contact Alamo roadside assistance with relevant information including the licence plate, make and model, colour (if known), nature of fault, precise location of vehicle, contact number, and whereabouts of keys.

  • Prepare a written accident/damage report

  • Submit the report to Alamo.

Digital licences

Alamo accepts electronic or digital driving licenses as long as they are accessed via a government app.

Driving in snow

Alamo allows driving in snow.

Driving licence requirements

Alamo requires that all drivers have held their license for at least 12 months, and present a valid photo ID such as a passport or government-issued photo ID.

If the driving license is not in English, an International Driving Permit or a NZTA-approved English translation is required. Renters are advised to check whether local authorities require foreign drivers to present an International Driving Permit to avoid the risk of potential fines. Renters with licenses from countries who are not part of the International Driving Permit Agreement should carry a certified translation of their licence.

If any driver is on a probationary license there is an additional Probationary License Fee of $23 per day.

Driving restrictions

You must not use the vehicle in any of the following (though not restricted to) use cases:

  • Smoke in the vehicle

  • Permit any animal (other than a disability assist dog) in the vehicle;

  • Interfere with any mechanical aspect of the vehicle;

  • Allow the vehicle to be driven by any person who is not an authorised driver;

  • Allow the vehicle to be used for the transport of passengers for hire or reward;

Alamo vehicles must not be operated off-road, on any beach, river, stream, through flood waters, or any road where the police of governing authority has issued a warning. You must never take the rental vehicle on:

  • Ball Hutt Road (Mt Cook),

  • Skippers Road (Queenstown),

  • Ninety Mile Beach (Northland),

  • Te Paki Stream Bed,

  • The road to Macetown in the Queenstown Area,

  • The coast road to Russell (Northland),

  • or any unformed road or any track or thoroughfare including gravel roads that is not officially designated a road including any beaches

Electric vehicles (EV)

Alamo supplies EVs with at least an 80% charge. Renters are expected to return the vehicle charged to at least 20%. Tesla EVs require a minimum age of at least 25.

Fuel and mileage

If you are unsure what fuel to use, please ask the station attendant or contact the Alamo rental location for advice. Alamo will supply the rental vehicle with a full tank of fuel, and expect the vehicle to be returned in the same condition. If you return the vehicle without a full tank of fuel, Alamo will charge you the refuelling cost along with a 12.5% surcharge fee. If you have chosen a pre-paid fuel option, then the above is not applicable.

Alamo supplies EVs with at least an 80% charge. Renters are expected to return the vehicle charged to at least 20%.

Infringements and other fines

Alamo does not pay any infringement notices and it is the sole responsibility of the hirer to pay all fines in relation to infringement notices issued during the rental period. In the event that Alamo receives an infringement notice for a speeding, parking, or other traffic infringement relating to the period the vehicle was on hire, Alamo charges the hirer an additional administration fee of $25, and will transfer the liability to the driver.

International driving permit (IDP)

If your driving license is not in English, an International Driving Permit or a NZTA-approved English translation is required. Renters with licenses from countries who are not part of the International Driving Permit Agreement should carry a certified translation of their licence.

Multi-island rentals

Alamo permits rental vehicles on the inter-island ferries crossing the Cook Strait.

Picking up the vehicle

To pick up an Alamo rental car you need to satisfy both the licence and payment criteria:

  • You must present a valid and accepted credit card or bank issued Mastercard or Visa debit card (see Accepted Forms of Payment above).

  • You must meet the licence rules.

  • For security purposes, the owner of the credit card entered on the payment step when making a booking must be present to collect the vehicle and is required to sign the Rental Agreement.

If you are going to be late to pick up your car, please contact Alamo as soon as possible.

Rental vehicle excess

Alamo rental vehicles are covered by standard motor vehicle insurance; however, an excess may be charged for any loss or damage incurred during the hire period, regardless of fault. This coverage may not be applicable if the vehicle has been used in a manner in contravention of the Alamo Terms and Conditions.

Rental vehicle excess reduction

The rental vehicle excess can be reduced through the purchase of collision damage waiver products as follows:

  • Economy, compact, full size, intermediate, and standard vehicles: $900.

  • SUVs, pick-ups, vans, and any premium vehicles: $1,100.

  • Electric vehicles: 1,300.

Excess insurance is also available through third party providers such as Prosura.

Returning a rental car

Contact the Alamo rental location if you wish to extend your rental. In the event of an early return, no refund applies. All hires are counted in 24 hour durations. In the event of a late return of under three hours, there will be a charge of 33% of the appropriate daily rental rate. A one-off late fee of $250 may apply.

Roadside assistance

Alamo, through the AA, provides 24/7 emergency roadside assistance for breakdown and accidents. If a roadside assistance callout relates to something that is your fault (for example running out of fuel, losing the keys, locking the keys in the vehicle, or if a wheel needs to be changed due to a puncture), there is a callout fee associated with roadside assistance. For any mechanical breakdowns related to a vehicle fault, there is no charge.

For EV rentals, in the event of a breakdown, the Tesla Roadside Assistance program (rather than AA) must be used.

Security deposit

The security deposit is a downpayment charged to your credit card for $200. Alamo will refund the bond amount upon return of the undamaged vehicle. Cash and debit cards are not accepted as a means of payment for the bond.

Tolls

Alamo does not pay any toll charges and it is the sole responsibility of the hirer to pay all toll charges incurred during the rental period. In the event that Alamo receives an unpaid toll notice relating to the period the vehicle was on hire, Alamo will charge the hirer an administration fee of $10 and pass the toll liability to the driver.

Young drivers

Alamo levies a Young Driver fee of $14.95 per day for drivers under the age of 25. Young drivers are permitted only to rent compact, economy, intermediate, and standard vehicles. Young drivers can only reduce their excess to $340.
