What documents will I need to pick up a rental car in New Zealand?

required documents for rental car NZ

When you pick up a rental car in New Zealand, you will need a few important documents. Make sure you bring the following items with you, otherwise you may not be able to rent a car.

Driver's licence

Generally, our suppliers in New Zealand require that driver's present their licence, which they must have held for a minimum of 12 months. Provisional or probationary licences are mostly not accepted. If the renter's licence is not printed in English, they will also need to present an International Driving Permit at the depot, along with their licence from their country of residence. Note that the International Driving Permit will not be accepted without being accompanied by the original driving licence.

Credit card

A valid credit card in the name of the driver must be presented upon collection of the vehicle, in order to cover the security bond. You will not be able to access these funds during the rental period. Debit cards may be accepted in limited circumstances, but it is best to check the terms and conditions of your rental agreement to be sure.

Sophie arrives to pick up her car in New Zealand

Sophie is visiting New Zealand from France. She arrives at the Auckland Airport depot to collect her vehicle. She must present a credit card in her name to cover the security bond. Because her driving licence is printed in French, she must also provide an International Driving Permit along with her licence.
