Once you’ve selected your hire car you can add a selection of extras including a child seat — but what type of child seat do you need?
Read on to find out.
When booking a rental car, it’s important to be mindful of the laws around child seats in New Zealand — all children in cars must travel in a child restraint until at least their 7th birthday. If there is a child restraint available in the car, they must use it when travelling until they turn 8.
In New Zealand, children under the age of seven must be secured in an approved restraint suitable for their age and size. As a general guide, the New Zealand Transport Agency recommends the following:
Children under 2 years old: Rear-facing child seat with an inbuilt harness. Capsules are not available to hire from car rental companies, only rear-facing seats.
2 years old to 4 years old: Forward-facing child seat with an inbuilt harness.
4 years old to 7 years old: Forward-facing child seat with an inbuilt harness or a booster seat with a harness.
Over 7 years old: Booster seat with a harness. If your child is taller than 148cm, they’ll be able to use the standard seat and adult seatbelt.
If you need to add a rear-facing, forward-facing child seat, or a booster seat to your booking, you can do so during the booking process depending on availability. If the option for child seats is ‘on request’, our team will contact you to confirm your request and let you know the updated cost.
If you have already made your booking, you can request a child seat by contacting our customer care team.
In a situation where you require more than two child seats, you’ll need to contact our customer care team as this request will depend on availability and the type of vehicle you are renting. Remember, it is the responsibility of the driver to ensure all passengers are secured in the vehicle correctly, including having children in the appropriate restraints.
Car rental providers will generally add a daily fee to your booking for each child seat, and this cost will vary depending on your rental provider. Some providers charge a daily rate (generally with a maximum cost per rental) while others charge a flat fee regardless of the length of rental. For more information please see the “Important Information” section in the VroomVroomVroom booking flow for details specific to your rental vehicle, or refer to the Terms and Conditions of your prospective rental car provider for current pricing.
