Reducing your Car Rental Insurance Excess in New Zealand
Firstly, it is important to note VroomVroomVroom does not directly sell any protection products or excess reduction packages. However, we would still like to help. You have 3 rental cover options:
Option 1. Choose to do nothing.
Pros: Your car rental actually comes with basic cover (most people call this basic insurance), so you don't actually need to buy the optional excess reduction if you don't want to.
Cons: In the event of an accident, suppliers will charge a maximum damage excess fee of between $3000 and $5500, depending on the car and the supplier.
Total Cost: $0 per day
Option 2. Purchase excess reduction at the rental desk.
Pros: When you pick up your car, you can choose to reduce the $3000 to $5500 of excess to around $300. This is the easiest way to reduce the cover excess.
Click a supplier logo to see excess reduction guide.
Cons: It is the most expensive way to reduce the excess cost
Total Cost: Between $25 -$40 per day, depending on the supplier. (plus local taxes + surcharges)
Option 3. Purchase Travel Insurance Today.
- Buy now and save later.
- Much cheaper for most 'longer than a day' trips.
- 1cover Travel Insurance includes a benefit of up to $5000 rental vehicle excess cover**
- Get cover for lost baggage and cancellations
- Frequent travellers benefit with an annual policy
Cons: In the event of an accident you must still pay the damage excess fee stated on the Rental Agreement to the car rental supplier and then contact 1Cover to claim it back. Taking this cover will allow you to claim reimbursement of the damage excess fee.
Total Cost: Approximately $10 per day*
(*In our test, the minimum charge was approximately $41, so you can't buy one day for $10).
**This cover does not take the place of rental vehicle insurance and only provides cover for the excess component up to the applicable section limit. Conditions Apply.
