When it comes to camping outside of campgrounds, New Zealand has strict laws. Freedom camping is not permitted in most parts of New Zealand. It is recommended that you stay at a designated campsite or caravan park to not only avoid fines but to be close to amenities and anything else you require. If you do camp in an undesignated area, you can be fined $200.
