New Zealand car hire price trends
Car hire prices move a lot — by season, by how far ahead you book, by city, and by where you collect the car. We pulled together millions of real searches made through VroomVroomVroom across 2025 to show how those prices actually behave, so you can plan when to book.

Rolling 90-day average (June 2025 – Sept 2025), compared like-for-like and weighted to the same vehicle-type mix. Updated monthly.

When is the cheapest time of the year to hire a car in New Zealand?
The month you travel makes a big difference to price
Averaged across all ten cities, July was the cheapest month nationally at around $108/day, while December was the most expensive at around $190/day — with February close behind at around $185/day. Every city and pickup type in this data peaks somewhere between November and March and bottoms out between June and August; none show a genuine winter-peak inversion. Queenstown follows that same shape — cheapest in June, priciest in February — rather than swinging counter to the national pattern.

City, on-airport or off-airport — which is cheaper?
Where you collect your car affects how much you pay
On-airport means a rental counter in or beside the terminal. Off-airport means a nearby depot reached by a short shuttle. Auckland is the only city in our data with off-airport options, where it was the cheapest pickup type at $99/day, against $139/day at the airport and $142/day in the city. Airport pickup was cheaper than city pickup in Christchurch and Queenstown; city pickup was cheaper in Auckland, Wellington, Hamilton, Dunedin and Tauranga. Rotorua, Napier and Nelson have no city-pickup data in this dataset.
Biggest airport vs. city gaps by vehicle type: Christchurch Intermediate car — $189/day at the airport vs $242/day in the city (~28% gap). Auckland Economy car — $142/day at the airport vs $132/day in the city (airport higher). Queenstown Compact car — $151/day at the airport vs $173/day in the city (~14% gap in favour of the airport).

Car hire price questions
Which month has the lowest car hire prices in New Zealand?
Averaged across our ten cities, July was the cheapest month nationally in 2025 at around $108/day, while December was the most expensive at around $190/day, with February close behind. Every city in this data follows the same broad shape — cheap in the middle of the year, expensive over the November–March holiday season — including Queenstown, whose ski season doesn’t show up as a separate winter price spike in this dataset.
Is it cheaper to pick up a hire car at the airport or in the city?
In Auckland — the only city with off-airport options in our data — off-airport depots (nearby locations reached by a short shuttle) averaged $99/day, cheaper than both the airport ($139/day) and city pick-up ($142/day). Elsewhere, city pick-up was cheaper in Auckland, Wellington, Hamilton, Dunedin and Tauranga, while the airport was cheaper in Christchurch and Queenstown. Rotorua, Napier and Nelson only have airport data in this dataset.
How far ahead should I book a hire car?
Booking at least two weeks ahead averaged $139/day nationally in 2025, compared with $171/day for same-day bookings — a difference of about $32/day. Booking one week out averaged $155/day. The further ahead you book, the more likely you are to find a lower rate.
Why do car hire prices change so much?
Car hire rates moved with demand across 2025. The November–March holiday season pushed rates up in every city in this data, before easing back over the mid-year months. Booking windows, vehicle class, pickup location, and the number of providers listing at a given time all contributed to price movements.
