Thames; where the Kiwi's go for a holiday

Over the last few years New Zealand had been rediscovered by the world and Thames is another must see spot to add to the growing list of tourist destinations. A gateway town to the Coromandel Peninsula in the North Island, Thames it the ideal place to base yourself as you explore the town and the Coromandel region.

The town has a historic charm all with the beautiful backdrop of the Thames coastline. With a diverse range of activities, there are plenty options to suit young and old. Take a day to see the Matatoki Farm Cheese, just 12 km out of town, and taste the locally made produce in a traditional farm setting. Or maybe a trip to the Wilderness Gems at Ngatea will help you find the perfect bit of New Zealand to take home with you.

But the majority of activities in this area involve the water. Boating and sailing are the biggest favourites amongst other things like water skiing and scuba diving, though there are loads of things to do involving the country side, like horse riding, golfing and rock climbing if you’re adventurous. The Coromandel (below) is a testament to ancient Maori culture, a real New Zealand experience.

If you’re in the sand at Hot Water Beach, dig into the sand and experience New Zealand’s volcanic past first hand. Hot pools are great fun and you can dig your own two hours either side of low tide.

For those with the shopping bug, Thames is the shopping capital of the region with a huge choice of specially shops and the Goldfields Shopping Mall. Don’t forget to include a stop at the many cafes and bars in the area, there are a few good restaurants on the main strip of Thames and a few more on the coast area. Craft shops are a plenty.

So for an easy one and a half hour’s drive out of Auckland, Hamilton or Tauranga, visiting Thames is an opportunity to see the beauty that New Zealand is famous for. Coromandel is the place even the locals want to holiday at, so it has to be spectacular.
