Palmerston North; small in stature, big in charm

Situated on the banks of the Manawatu River, nestled at the foot of the Tararua Mountain Range, Palmerston North is a vibrant city with something for everyone. Museums, galleries, gardens, arts and crafts, parks and golf courses abound.

If it’s shopping you are after, Palmerston North might be a small city in comparison, but you should be able to find something at the larger malls. Try the Downtown Complex on Broadway Avenue or The Plaza. There are also specialist boutiques along George Street, if the others don’t take your fancy.

Once all the shopping is done, you can relax at one of the many restaurants, cafes or bars. Try the main streets like Broadway or George to start off with.

Otherwise there’s plenty to do to keep you busy, this city is only two hours drive away from vineyards and ski- fields.

Try the tastes of Hawkes Bay wines or play in the snow at the Central Plateau (Whakapapa and Turoa). There is also a stunningly refurbished theatre on Broadway Avenue that stages plays if you want to keep local.

Palmerston North has an international airport only a short distance from the city, but is also easily accessible by car. Only seven hours drive from Auckland and two hours from the windy capital, Wellington.

If you want to see the New Zealand landscape, driving between cities is the best option. With a car rental you can stop along the way to visit the attractions you want, and skip all the boring stuff a tour bus would make you sit through.
