The Little Kiwi
The national symbol of New Zealand is the Kiwi. This small bird who at its biggest is the size of a chicken is endemic to New Zealand. The bird has recently been discovered as a relative to the Emu which is native to Australia. Unlike the Emu the Kiwi is not served in restaurants as an exotic dish due to its rarity. All breeds of Kiwi are (which there are Five species that have been identified) are extremely rare with only approximately 70,000 birds in existence. One species is the North Island Brown Kiwi whose habitat is located in the Hastings area.
These little birds are extremely feisty animals and have been known to charge at humans to scare them out of their territory with the sound similar to a charging deer. They are a sturdy little bird that are very unique as they are flightless, dig burrows underground and have similar features to a mammal. Introduced animals and loss of habitat are the greatest cause of the reduction in numbers. Conservation reserves have been set up all over the country, in these area’s all pests have been removed to give the birds a fighting chance.
