Wellington Night Life

Where to go if you're stumped for your night out...

Self proclaimed ‘Cultural capital of New Zealand’, Wellington has a big name to live up to. Somehow though, we don’t doubt it’ll breeze through competition standards.

You want it, you got it seems to be the motto. Wellington has clustered its best night life and party atmosphere into little compact areas so that you don’t have to go far to find something you like (also means less damage on a stilettoed foot).

Firstly, you’ve got Tatou… Jungle, rave, hardcore etc. downstairs, and the cooler than cool wine and cruisey stuff upstairs. Lovely, isn’t it? Everyone’s happy.

Then there’s Café Paradiso (with their new Blue Room for the dancers), and the John St Bar and Grill which appears to be a huge pub favourite. And ladies, if you want champers, go to C.O. 2, it’s the house specialty.

For those with expensive tastebuds, there's Matterhorn on Cuba Street which lets you drink out of a trophy for a cool $100. Thre are also 50 different cocktails to try... But the hip kids go to Ponderosa (which sounds funny, but isn't) sipping wine and cocktails at log tables and hidden in alcoves.

The Rouge Bar plays black and white movies in the bathrooms and has a very extensive wine list for buffs. On Cuba Street again...

Whatever your fancy, the nights are long here in Wellington, 11pm starts and in some cases 7am closing times (yikes). Most of the good stuff is held somewhere between Courtenay Place (Jet is pictured right) to Willis Street, plus there’s Cuba Street, Lambton Quay (Concrete Lounge pictured above right) and Queens Wharf.
