Wellington LOTR

Lord of the stunning landscapes, too

Wellington was put on the tourist destination map by director Peter Jackson and the Lord of the Rings trilogy. Peter Jackson showcased what Wellington had to offer to the world. Many tourists have come to see for themselves the picturesque views from the movie and to find out what Wellington is all about.

A good place to start, if you can hold off from visiting the film sites, is New Zealand’s national museum, Te Papa Tongarewa, uniquely displays New Zealand’s indigenous culture and lifestyle alongside colonial Wellington. There are many walking tours available to show you around Wellington. Take an overall walk showing a little bit of everything from art and culture to shopping or take a tour suited to your particular interest such as a heritage walk.

As far as those film sites are concerned, there are regular tours to the Lord of the Rings film sites specifically to Seatoun and Mount Victoria. Seatoun played host to the hobbit’s village and Fort Dorset was used as the village of Bree in the first film. Wellington is also where you can see the Gardens of Isengard, Helms Deep, Rivendell, River Anduin (above) and the exclusive and beautiful Lothlorien.

There are loads of tour groups to travel around with that focus on film trivia and sights. NZ Encounters offers a thorough and educational (not to mention breathtakingly scenic) view of New Zealand's famous film sites. Their 21 day Middle Earth Adventure Tour is a must for LOTR film buffs.

Whether you’re after that “I’ve been there feel” when watching a movie or just want to learn about a different culture, Wellington will certainly accommodate you with plenty to see and do. You can do it your own way by renting a cheap rental car and cruising down highways at your own pace.
