Grandpas Guide to Driving in Invercargill
Hello, readers! I’m back again with another destination. You might have been thinking about taking a trip to Invercargill, New Zealand. It’s a good thing your Grandpa Ben’s here to show you the ropes. I’m rather experienced with the area and trust me, kids. To get the best out of Invercargill, all you really need to do is listen to me.The very first piece of trivia you’ll probably learn about Invercargill is that it’s the southernmost city of New Zealand. It was put up in between the 19th and the 20th century so the vintage buildings and wide streets named after British and Scottish rivers give visitors the impression that they rode a time machine to reach this timeless treasure of a place.
Apart from that, Invercargill is lucky to be within the vicinity of the Southland plains and the city is blessed with rich, fertile soil that’s perfect for farming. Abundance doesn’t only apply to Invercargill’s agriculture, it can be applied to its modern urban delights as well. There’s so much to do in the city with enough golf courses, parks, conference centres, educational and sports facilities, cafes, art galleries and theatres to keep its 52,000 or so inhabitants interested and busy for many days to come.
Home to about 52,000 people.
Besides being aware of the aforementioned facts, it would definitely be helpful to know where to rent a car in Invercargill. The city has a variety of scenic locations to come visit and I’m quite sure you don’t plan on moving around via your own two feet. If that isn’t enough of a reason for you, you should know that in Invercargill, traffic jams don’t exist! It’s smooth and easy cruising all the way, lucky visitor. So, I reiterate. It would be more than wise to rent a car.

1. Central Business DistrictIf you have a taste for Architecture you can start at the Central Business District (CBD) where all the action is. The CBD is encased by Leven, Tay, Daveron and Gala streets but you can find it on the intersection of Esk and Kelvin streets.
2. Wachner PlaceA lovely place to catch some sunshine. It’s a cleverly-designed civic open area that entices people to just sit, relax and enjoy the fresh air. A little south of Wachner Place is the Bank Corner. Here you can find three beautiful buildings that used to be banks. This kind of turn of the 20th Century architecture is definitely worth the time to check out.

3. Queen’s Park
Up north of the CBD is Queen’s Park. It’s a 81 hectare, Edwardian-styled city park that houses a lot of perks like rose gardens, duck ponds, playgrounds for kids, a bird aviary and even a zoo.
4. Southland Museum and Art GalleryThe pyramid shaped museum holds a variety of activities and exhibitions that show visitors the best of the South. These include a Roaring 40’s Gallery that presents the Sub-Antarctic Islands, and the world’s only Tuatarium. It’s the biggest public display of live tuataras, spiny, lizard-like reptiles that already existed in the time of dinosaurs. Sounds pretty cool, right? The Southland Museum and Art Gallery is an eventful place that you won’t regret visiting.
5. Anderson Park Art GalleryDrive up north of the town and you’ll come across the place. In this 300-acre block you’ll find a park and an exquisite building that used to be the home to one of Invercargill’s earliest business tycoons, Sir Robert Anderson. Now it’s the home of an impressive collection of New Zealand art and I insist you to take a look. It’s not everyday that you get to see Kiwi art and culture being preserved like that. After you’re done inside the house you can go out and have a picnic on the lush grounds of Anderson Park. It’s a really captivating place that many people had their weddings here. So make a call and book yourself a place and time at the Anderson Park Art Gallery. Don’t miss out and bring your rented car over there, okay?
That’s all for my top spots to see in Invercargill, folks. Time to get some shut-eye. Old men need their beauty sleep too. I hope you found my article useful when you reach Invercargill. I wish you a safe and happy trip. Cheers!
