Queenstown Accommodation

The perfect hotel; a finishing touch

Everyone knows is New Zealand is beautiful. But set amongst icy lakes and snow capped mountains, Queenstown in the winter is the warmest shade of cold. Lake Wanaka permeates calmness even as the city is abuzz with snow fever, and bungalows that scatter the mountain sides breathe romantic warmth into the frosty air.

Activities

Queenstown boasts a huge list of winter activities, that is, if you can bring yourself to leave the fireplace. If not, there are dozens of hotels, bed and breakfasts, retreats and even house boats to choose from to rest your head. Queenstown's claim to fame is their amazing ski sites, so you'd be a fool to visit in winter and miss your opportunity...

Retreats

If a romantic retreat is the plan, don't look past Hikurangi Lodge, a small bed and breakfast boasting 180 degree views of the lake and mountains and honest Kiwi hospitality from its hosts, Shirley and Barry Meyer.

For the backpackers, Alpine Lodge is a cosy stay for bookworms, while the Queenstown Central YHA lives in the city centre, close to all the action and ready for snow-filled adventure. You can also try the Milford Wanderer Overnight Cruises, cruising down the Milford Sound while you sleep.

Hotels

But if a central hotel experience is a must for your stay, the Kingsgate Hotel Terraces is a ten minute walk from the city centre, a guaranteed way to keep your finger on the city pulse. This hotel is a neat establishment, with large rooms and green gardens, perfect for the kids. While The Remarkables Lodge is the biggest and most popular, it is pretty expensive especially when you take into account the cost of ski and lift passes, eating, drinking and other activities in the area. If you're lucky you can keep an eye out for cheap deals that group your room along with your flights and passes, as they're worth a good look.

Another good hotel is the four star Heritage Queenstown, a 2km drive from the city centre, and a high class experience. Thankfully though, this experience won't cost you too dearly as you can get a dirt cheap rate from sites like TripAdvisor.com or HotelClub.com.

Don't forget to book ahead though, Queenstown is popular all four seasons, especially leading into winter when snow sports have begun.

No matter how you go about it, Queenstown is going to impress. It might be the mountains, or the lakes, maybe the winter sports, or the romantic log cabins, but this winter city is bound to warm your soul. Rug up and brace yourself for the heat.
