Reducing your car rental excess

Insurance can play a big part in helping you decide which car rental company you want to book with, and most times you'll need to know how much insurance will cost before you place your booking. This is understandable since sometimes the cost for the insurance is almost as much as the car itself!

If you've ever tried to figure out your quote inclusive of the Excess Reduction Insurance (ER), you'll know this is a hard task. Suppliers generally won't include this in quotes and it's quite difficult to get pricing for most rentals. The reason they won't quote for the insurance as it's something you have to sign up for on the day. They like to talk you through your options first and let you read their contracts before you add it onto your quote.

While this is fair, it's sometimes frustrating if you need to know beforehand how much your rental will add up to. Below we've collated a table of all suppliers and their fees per day for the ER, so you don't have to call every company in order to get a straight answer. While we can't supply copies of each contract, at least you can factor in the correct amount for your rental.

• Standard Excess Liability **$3375 ($4218.75 for specialty/people mover/luxury/4wd)

• .Excess Reduction (ER) ** $24.75/28.13 per day  In New Zealand, reduces the excess in most cases from **$3375 to **$337.50. Varies by age of renter, location, type of vehicle and rate. Note: ER does not cover certain loss or damage and cannot be waived in full.

• Optional Protection Package  from**$27 per day
  Includes Excess Reduction (ER), Personal Accident Insurance (PAI) and Personal Effects and Baggage Insurance (PEB) at selected locations in New Zealand
• Personal Effects and Baggage Insurance (PEB) **$3.50 per day
• Personal Accident Insurance (PAI) **$3.50 per day
• drivers 21-25yrs cannot reduce excess

NOTE: If you choose the Protection Package, please read the PAI and PEB Policy and the Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) contained in the Terms and Conditions of Rental.

• Standard Liability **$3375 ($4218.75 for specialty/people mover/luxury/4wd).
• Excess reduction is available for an additional (from) $28.13/$31.50 per day. Acceptance of this optional package will reduce the damage excess from $3375 (or $4218.75 for groups P, F, V, L and W) to $337.50, subject to change. In addition, Budget Driver and Passenger Protection provides cover for personal accidents.

• Accident Damage Excess (ADE) applies to all rentals. **$2925 for standard vehicle classes (ECAR-FWAR) and $3375 for specialty vehicles (IFAR-XVAR)
• This can be reduced by purchasing Accident Excess Reduction (AER) cover for $27 per day. Accident Excess Reduction Insurance Excess reduces **$270 for standard vehicle classes and $337.50 for specialty vehicles.
• Glass Cover Insurance (GCI) The excess on glass only (windscreens, windows, headlights) may be reduced (at the renter’s option) to NIL at the time of rental by purchasing GCI. GCI may be purchased alone or in conjunction with AER above. Some AER options may include GCI.

• Price includes standard Damage Liability Fee for NZD$3094-3375 (if further reduction waiver is not purchased at branch)
• Loss Damage Waiver (LDW) is available at $21.38 per day reduces excess to $338
• Peace of Mind Cover (includes Damage Waiver, Damage Waiver Plus, Theft Waiver, Super Personal Accident and Effects Cover) (POM) is available for $24.55 per day. WHT (Windscreen, Head lights and Tyres) – This is an option included in the Total Protection Package

• In the event of damage, an Accident Damages Excess (ADE) will apply per incident regardless of fault. This is the amount the renter contributes towards the loss or damage. The ADE is currently $2812-50 for the economy manual, compact manual, compact auto, intermediate auto and fullsize auto car classes, and $3375 for the premium wagon, 4WD, luxury 8 seater, luxury sedan and premium 4WD car classes. Excess amounts may vary so please check at time of reservation.
• PKG cost* is: Economy manual, compact manual, compact auto, intermediate auto and fullsize auto car classes $37.12 per day. Premium wagon, 4WD, luxury 8 seater, luxury sedan and premium 4WD car classes $48.10 per day
• Accident Excess Reduction (AER) reduces the ADE to nil. AER cost* is $28.12 per day for standard vehicles $33.75 for specialty/premium vehicles
• Personal Accident Insurance (PAI) and Personal Effects cover available at the counter. Combinations of these optional services are available; however PEC is only available as an option when taken as part of the PKG or in conjunction with PAI.
